Time to bust some myths that too many people still believe.

  1. People with schizophrenia are usually violent.

  3. Antidepressants will turn you into a zombie or make you addicted.

  4. Physical exercise can be as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression

  5. Mental health conditions are always lifelong conditions

  7. If you believe in God or have strong faith, you shouldn’t never need to worry about with mental health.

  8. If someone’s really suicidal, they won’t talk about it, they’ll just do it.

  9. You can always spot someone with a mental illness by how they look or act.

The Age of Misinformation

We are consuming content non-stop, TikTok videos, Instagram reels, AI-generated advice, and “healing” hot takes on every corner of the internet. And while some of it can be helpful, a lot of it is shared by people with no training, no context, and no understanding of what they're really talking about.

The danger? It sounds convincing. It feels relatable. And without real information, you’re more likely to delay support, dismiss your symptoms, or judge others unfairly.

Why This Hits Harder in Certain Communities

One of the biggest things I hear in Black and ethnic minority spaces is this:

"You don’t need medication, you just need to pray/hustle/be grateful." "Antidepressants will change you." "We don't need therapy, just pray on it."

The shame runs deep. The fear of judgement is real. And I get it, we were raised to survive, not to soften. But we’re not meant to carry it all alone.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Question the source of anything you consume online. “It sounds smart” doesn’t equal truth.

  • Normalise asking for help...especially with your friends and children.

  • Speak openly in your community. Every honest conversation is a seed of change.

  • Don’t write off medication just because someone on the internet said you shouldn’t need it.

Mental health isn’t a trend. It’s not a vibe. And it’s not one-size-fits-all.
